Although the bidet has been around for years, the earliest one being in 1710, it is amazing how many people do not know what it is. Originally developed in France, it was used to clean the vaginal or prostrate part of the body between baths, which were often far apart. Formerly just a container of water, It was not until around 1750 that a spray was developed. This was constructed by placing water in a container and pumping the water upward.

In the days before regular bathroom toilets, a chamber pot was used during the night or when someone was ill, for this purpose. During the day, there was the regular outhouse. As a result, a bidet was used, with the chamber pot, in the bedroom of the house.

Today, the device is featured in the regular bathroom, next to the toilet. Surprisingly, this unit is still not popular in American homes. It exists, primarily, in Europe and upscale hotels throughout the world. However, it is American manufacturers who are at the top suppliers of this unit, which is sent to other countries.

This unit, used by both men and women, is also found in many European hospitals, as it is invaluable in helping people who have had surgery, diseases of the bowel or other private parts. It is also used in their nursing homes and places where sanitary care must be given. Medication can be added to the water in such cases.

Today’s models usually come as separate units and are placed next to the toilet. Made from the same materials, they blend in very nicely with the bathroom arrangement. It is an excellent way to maintain personal hygiene with a bidet toilet.

There are four of different styles available in today’s market. There is the Over the Rim, Heated Rim, Spray and combination. The simplest model is Over the Rim which is simply filled with water by a standard faucet while the Heated Rim the water enters under the rim. Conventional model are specifically designed to sit on, straddled, facing the faucet. After adjusting the temperature of the water, it is directed to the body section to be cleaned. Another type is designed with a seat where one sits down the same as on a regular toilet with water coming from the side, front and or rear of the unit.
